Since I started driving a few weeks ago, I kept feeling something behind my head. I mostly drive to PT and have a ponytail so I figured it was tied up higher than usual and bumping the head rest. Well today I’m heading to PT, with my ponytail, and again I feel something touching the back of my head. I reached back and IT WAS THE HEADREST touching the back of my head. Or rather, my head was resting on the headrest.
For the longest time, when I would drive over 30 minutes, my neck would start to hurt badly. I ended up getting a cervical pillow to use when I needed it. Since I started driving, while I haven’t driven for very long periods yet, my neck hasn’t bothered me at all.
Here’s what I figured out. All these years of my spine gradually curving more and more, it was pushing my head forward. My head wasn’t close to the head rest and therefore my it was just constantly jutting forward, unsupported. I was developing a left sided cervical curve (in addition to right thoracic and left lumbar curves) and my fusion below cervical levels has started to straighten out the cervical curve. The surgeon had mentioned that was a possibility and maybe it actually is happening!
Just thought I’d share that. It’s the little things every day that make me smile and make me look forward to my new future.
